Resource: State Strategies to Improve Health Outcomes for People Living with HIV

People living with HIV (PLWH) have the opportunity to live longer and with better health outcomes if they have access to antiretroviral therapy (ART).  Although this treatment allows PLWH to achieve virologic suppression, multiple barriers still exist for receiving the treatment.  In 2017, the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) partnered with 19 states to study the needs for comprehensive quality care for PLWH.  The partnership promoted collaboration between state health departments and Medicaid to share data, which can be a challenge when the two are part of different agencies.  This toolkit provides strategies for state officials to improve the quality of care for PLWH and also resources that the NASHP has found to be beneficial.  The toolkit will continue to be updated regularly as policies and data evolve.
