MN’s population is gradually increasing. MN is projected to gain 1.1 million new residents by 2070. MN’s residents aged 85+ are expected to double in the next 35 years, and in the next decade, retirees will outnumber school-aged children for the first time in our state’s history. MN’s minority populations saw an increase of 18% between 2013 and 2018. This increase in residents of color will continue to grow, becoming one-third of the state’s total population by 2053.

In 2023, the total female population represented 49.9% (2,851,582) of the state’s total population (5,713,716 residents). 77% of (or 2,206,781) MN women are ages 18+. Women 65+ represent 23.5% of MN women 18+.

In 2020, the average life expectancy was 79.1 for all Minnesotans, and 81.4 for MN women. MN ranks 7th highest in the nation for female life expectancies at birth.

County-level demographics

Since our last Report Card, there have been some shifts in population growth. Most rural counties are experiencing an in-migration of 30-49-year olds.
