Background
In 2021, the JIWC formed a small policy workgroup, which reviewed state and federal statutes around pregnant and postpartum people in prison. They reviewed 491 state law records and 65 federal law records from Westlaw*, which were then uploaded to Dedoose, where they were qualitatively coded by topic.
JIWC members are using this state and federal policy clearinghouse to disseminate states’ incarceration policies through policy briefs, scholarly publications and webinars (2023-2024).
Briefs
- State Laws on the Death Penalty for People Who Are Pregnant While Incarcerated (October 2024)
- Reproductive Health Care Legislation For Incarcerated People (August 2024)
- Ensuring Adequate Nutrition for People who are Pregnant and Incarcerated (March 2024)
- State Laws on Substance Use Treatment for Incarcerated Pregnant & Postpartum People (December 2023)
- Abortion Access for Incarcerated People in the U.S. (May 2023)
