JIWC RA

1) SUPPORT JIWC EFFORTS (~6 hrs/wk)

  • Conduct JIWC Research and Create JIWC Products (monthly newsletter, webinars, videos, web pages, briefs, social media communications, scholarly publications and other communications) 

  • Create policy briefs and accompanying web pages:
    • Assist with coding state and federal policies related to JIWC using Dedoose
    • Assist with summarizing key findings and preparing dissemination materials (including drafting policy briefs, reviewing and editing other team members’ work)
    • Identify relevant research related to key policy topics
    • Create new searches for policy work, documenting processes for new searches
    • Plan, schedule and actively engage in policy team meetings
  • Find and curate content and create draft newsletter (September through May) issues using Google Drive system 
  • Solicit content from JIWC members and collaborators
  • Systematically identify content from external sources (e.g., creating PubMed and Google Scholar alerts, subscribing to relevant listservs) 
  • Find/promote JIWC member research, products, accomplishments and events 
  • Edit for consistency in formatting, looking for spelling errors, etc. 
  • Solicit newsletter feedback
  • Work closely with newsletter technical editor(s) to send eNews out using Mailchimp 
  • Track readership and engagement and keep mailing list(s) updated
  • Document a process for developing and editing newsletter content
  • Utilize Google Drive to create, store and share team member contacts, newsletter-related tasks, and activities
  • Communicate with: supervisor, team members, JIWC members and guest authors (if applicable; sending out invitations, reminders, collecting materials, etc.), representatives and others in a timely manner
    • Craft written or video community spotlights (every other month) 
    • Create and implement a communications plan and communications pieces to identify other stakeholders and advertise the newsletter (seek out people/entities and invite to sign up), promoting newsletters broadly and increasing subscribership
  • Expand the mailing lists by systematically and strategically disseminating the newsletter to individuals’ whose work is featured in the newsletter
  • Update JIWC collaborative on newsletter progress and activities 
  • Develop and administer surveys, summarizing results and identifying opportunities to incorporate feedback into subsequent newsletters
  • Organize and Implement JIWC Meetings and Activities
  • Maintain inbox, calendar, website and JIWC page
  • Co-develop bimonthly meeting content of interest to JIWC members, including students 
  • Organize bimonthly meeting agendas and supporting materials (communicate with JIWC members, track meeting attendance, co-facilitate meetings, create and distribute meeting notes, follow up on action items
  • Co-create evaluations and evaluation plans
  • Create communications pieces and JIWC products 
  • Facilitate MN JIWC team efforts: 
    • Plan and schedule team meetings, including developing team meeting agendas, organizing and distributing team meeting minutes and following up on action items without need for prompting
  • Utilize Google Drive to create, store and share  activities

2) SUPPORT THE MDH MODEL PRACTICES IN COUNTY JAILS PROJECT (~2 hrs/wk)

  • Facilitate a Learning Community 
  • Attend the quarterly meetings (9:00am-2:00pm) at various locations, quarterly)
  • Help develop the agenda for quarterly meetings in partnership with project team
  • Provide follow up action steps from the learning community meetings (e.g., finding resources)
  • Collect, review and summarize literature on relevant topics (e.g., school-jail partnerships); disseminate to the learning community
  • Prepare materials for the learning community meetings and provide support facilitating the learning community meetings 
  • Develop and share meeting minutes with the learning community
  • Read and review the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) model practice guide thoroughly
  • Assist with Staff Training
  • As needed, survey jail staff and key partners for training needs and interests
  • Develop post-training assessments to monitor understanding, impact and application of content. Gather examples of training assessments to seed potential questions. Review with Project Team and learning community. 
  • Analyze and summarize the post-training assessment results in a brief written document or presentation.  
  • Develop Partnerships
  • Help to distribute educational resources and other materials for jail programmers, parent educators and other key partners, as needed
  • Support planning for annual public meetings (in-person or remote as necessary)  
  • Participate in the public meetings, in-person or remotely as feasible. Develop a summary or minutes from the meeting and share with participants and the learning community at large.  
  • Perform Administrative Tasks
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings
  • Support analysis of the Parenting Inside Out and other evaluation data, developing basic summary data reports that can be shared with the learning community and other stakeholders
  • Assist in the identification and creation of materials promoting MN Model Jail Practices and support evaluating process outcomes for the project objectives

3) SERVE ON MCHIG EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SUPPORTING REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE BOOK CLUB ACTIVITIES (~2 hrs/wk)

  • Serve as MCHIG Executive Committee Member
  • Manage Materials and Systems and Organize Book Club Sessions
    • Arrange book club material criteria and work with faculty to select discussion pieces (articles, books, videos, writings, etc.) 
    • Identify databases, journals and authors in MCH and related fields 
    • Set up feeds and alerts to track scholarly articles, including articles by MCH students featured in the Public Health Review (PHR)
    • Identify and recruit MCH faculty and students to facilitate discussions around new scholarly work (including those in press) 
    • Create a tracking system of publications, videos and other writings for Club discussion in Drive and Google Calendar in order to schedule meetings and readings/viewings one semester ahead of schedule. Consider utilizing national observance months to cluster topics and select readings accordingly.
    • Consult with University Librarians as needed
    • Initiate and lead regular RJBC team planning meetings (developing agendas, sends meeting reminders, takes notes, identifies/ follows up on action items, corresponds with panelists, guest speakers, etc)
    • Organize and co-facilitate RJBC virtual sessions and logistics for a total of 3-4 sessions/seminars per academic year (avoiding conflicts with other events, including SPH and Center-sponsored events, and arranging with religious observances and academic calendars in mind, works with executive committee members to identify cosponsors/speakers, develops a 6-8 week timeline for each event, works with MCHIG communications EC member to develop social media advertisement, crafts email blasts, communicate with IT, develops registration forms and evaluations, gathers bios, collect RSVPs, draft invites, etc.)
  • Communicate and Collaborate 
  • Plan and executes session timelines for the entire semester at beginning of each semester
  • Solicit feedback on session timing from MCH students and MCHIG members
  • Communicate meeting details with attendees
  • Promote events (in classes, with cohort, other students and RAs) 
  • Craft, send and collect participant evaluation data 
  • Identify ways to collaborate with other student groups (at the UMN, at other MCHB-funded Centers) to cross-promote meetings, events and opportunities
  • Identify and track other COEs and Catalyst Programs that are hosting book/journal clubs
  • Work closely with the MCHIG communications EC member to approve communication designs and pieces for promotional materials
  • Identifies courses to make meeting and event announcements in (own courses, email instructors wITH info)
  • Communicate progress with RJBC planning team, EC members and supervisor(s) during regular meetings and via email
  • Communicate with Center RAs, staff, faculty and others to ensure timely submission of promotional materials for inclusion in monthly newsletters and for posting on social media for posting on social media
