Abstract:
Project Overview: The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) developed a pilot program to use community navigators for outreach and enrollment in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) and WISEWOMAN programs. The programs are intended to screen and educate uninsured women about breast cancer, cervical cancer and heart disease. The Genesee County Health Department in Flint, Michigan, one of the local providers of these programs, volunteered to participate in the pilot project. The goals of the project are to use a community navigator to (1) Increase the number of women participating in the BCCCP/WISEWOMAN programs; and (2) Remove or reduce barriers that prevent women from enrolling in or continuing with the BCCCP/WISEWOMAN programs.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe how the community navigator is, and will be, used to increase enrollment and reduce barriers to participation in the BCCCP/WISEWOMAN programs in Genesee County. The paper also describes the background and rationale for the community navigator project as well as evaluation metrics that will be used in September, 2015 to assess if the goals of the pilot project were met.
