Abstract:

Axis Medical Center provides healthcare to those in the surrounding neighborhood of the two locations on Nicollet Avenue and Lake Street. Axis has been making strides in increasing cancer screening among the patients served, which mainly consists of Somali immigrants. This is important as this population may be experiencing daily stressors from existing structural biases, social inequities and racism that could be more pressing than longer-term health outcomes such as cancer. Through two patient navigators, various screening events and culturally competent care, rates of screening have increased in this population.
