Abstract:

Substance use disorders are a growing problem in the United States. Women, in particular, have a difficult time recovering due to socioeconomic issues, including comorbid psychiatric conditions, history of childhood abuse and increased vulnerability to the effects of substances, and a higher poverty rate. Single mothers face more barriers to care than men as the fear of losing custody of their children is ever-present. These factors highlight the need for a gender-specific treatment protocol and facility. While in recovery, women need to be equipped with the necessary internal and external resources for a successful and sustained recovery. The internal and external resources are their recovery capital. This document discusses a framework for developing recovery capital in individuals with a substance use disorder. The framework was created for use in a transitional recovery housing facility for women and their children. However, its principles apply to other recovery settings.
