Beginning in Fall 2021, MCH Program trainees (i.e., students funded through the Center) have participated in an Emerging MCH Leadership Skills Institute, which focuses on building their professional skills and MCH competency knowledge.

The Institute is unique to the UMN’s Center for Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Public Health, and complements the MCH Program curriculum. The goal of the Institute is to build MCH competency knowledge and professional skills, ensuring that there are adequate numbers of knowledgeable and highly skilled public health leaders working in–and elevating the needs of–MCH populations. 

Details

The Institute will consist of four workshops a year with content determined by a planning team of trainees, alumna, MDH staff, MCH faculty, and Center faculty and staff. Workshops will touch on topics such as secondary analysis of MCH data sets, building cultural competency skills, presenting and communicating science, working with CYSHCN populations, and more. 

Workshops center on the LIFE (Leadership, Interdisciplinary, Family-centered & Equity) Framework, developed by Dr. Sharon Milberger at MI LEND, and which offers a different way to conceptualize the 12 MCH Leadership Competencies.

Who

All workshops will be required for Center-funded students (deployed students, student technical support positions, RAs, etc.) who will attend as their schedules allow; however, it will be open to other MCH students interested in attending. Once a year, a CYSHCN-focused workshop will include state Title V staff, local MCH professionals, and fellows, trainees and community scholars from the MCHB-funded Leadership, Education and Training (LET) Program in Maternal & Child Nutrition, Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) and Leadership in Adolescent Health (LEAH) programs.
